Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has questioned if a partnership between Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes would work due to their similarities.
United cracked open their war chest in January and splashed out an initial fee of £47m to sign Fernandes from Sporting CP.
And the 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder has made an instant impact at the Red Devils before the Premier League season was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Berbatov has also been impressed with Fernandes' scintillating form, but he did raise concerns over him forging an effective midfield partnership with Pogba.
"I don't know if Fernandes and Pogba can play together," the 39-year-old Bulgarian told Betfair.
"Fernandes has quickly become an influential player for United. I'm pleased and impressed by how well integrated into the team he's become in a short space of time.
"His teammates are looking for him with the ball because they know he can create magic. He looks happy to be playing for United. I really hope he continues in this form.
"As a fan of Paul Pogba, I want him to stay at United, I think it would be best for him, but I am curious to see how he will link up with Fernandes.
"They're similar players, both intelligent enough to think three steps ahead when they're on the ball.
"Sometimes footballers are too similar to play together. But I hope that's not the case here because, with Fernandes and Pogba in the same midfield, United could be a very imaginative team that would surprise opponents next season or even sooner."
Pogba, 27, has been reduced to eight appearances for United this season due to various ankle injuries.
The French superstar, who has been linked with Real Madrid and Juventus, has a year left on his current deal at Old Trafford.
However, the Red Devils do have the option to extend Pogba's contract by an additional year.
