'The 10 Best Left-Backs In World Football Right Now Have Been Ranked

Liverpool's Andy Robertson has been named the second-best left-back in the world, just beaten to top spot by Barcelona and Spain star Jordi Alba.

Both players are renowned for their stamina, attacking instincts and for providing plenty of assists - more crucial than ever for modern left-backs.

The top 10, put together by FourFourTwo magazine, hails Alba as "the complete full-back for club and country". Robertson is praised for his partnership with LFC right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold - and the Scot is recognised as "the better defender of the two".

The only other Premier League representative is Leicester City's Ben Chilwell, just reward for the 23-year-old's "outstanding" 2019/20 season.

Chilwell is in ninth spot, just above the youngest player on the list: Bayern Munich's breakout star Alphonso Davies. The 19-year-old "may not even be a natural left-back... but he's already proving himself as one of the best full-backs in Europe."

He's still the second-best Bayern player listed, however, with Austria's versatile David Alaba in sixth place.

The older guard is represented by two Brazilian internationals, who still occupy positions in the top five of the countdown. Alex Sandro of Juventus is in third spot, praised for his combination play with Cristiano Ronaldo on the left flank.

In fifth, Real Madrid's Marcelo is the oldest player present at 31 years young. "He's arguably the greatest in his position ever," state FourFourTwo - which is a pretty big shout considering there's competition from the likes of Paulo Maldini and Marcelo's countryman Roberto Carlos.

The ageing great is, however, one place below his replacement: France international Ferland Mendy, purchased last summer and enjoying a fine debut season.
