'Jurgen Klopp's Wife Stopped Him From Taking Manchester United Job

By Mike Parrott

Jurgen Klopp's wife supposedly stopped him taking the Manchester United job back in 2013 when the German manager was on a shortlist to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 53-year-old, who has just led Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League title in 30 years, has also taken them to a Champions League trophy as well in 2018/19.

But things could have been different for Klopp after he was placed on the shortlist to take over at Manchester United not once, but twice.

Firstly he was a candidate for the job in 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and then the season after David Moyes was sacked from his position after just a number of months in the role.

Klopp has said on record that he loved the way United played and in the past, has compared his style of football to Ferguson's.

However, supposedly, it was his wife who told him not to take the United job all those years ago.

Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson opened up about the situation further, and said the following to Norwegian television channel TV2 on Friday:

"I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other. He looked at me and asked 'Why?'.

"Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United but his wife said it wasn't right. When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It's as if he is created for Liverpool."

Even though he is correct that Klopp did turn down United twice, it was more due to the different circumstances.

He had just won the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and led them to a Champions League final and didn't want to leave the amazing project he had created. The same with the season later.

When Liverpool came calling, however, Klopp had just "resigned" as Dortmund lingered in the relegation zone for the majority of the season.
