Solskjaer insists his Man United team 'is going places' despite poor form

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists his Manchester United team 'is going places' despite just four Premier League wins and three defeats this season.

United sit a lowly 13th in the table ahead of Sunday's visit to Southampton and speculation over Solskjaer's position is unlikely to vanish anytime soon.

But the Norwegian insists his team is improving and can shake off the inconsistent form that marked the early weeks of the campaign, pointing to three straight wins against Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Istanbul Basaksehir ahead of their trip to St Mary's.

'We live in a results business and all I want is for Man United to improve as a team and as a club,' Solskjaer said.

'I have a very good dialogue with the club all of the time. You have to think long-term and short-term - and I would never ever think that this is my chance to prove a point and that's it's all about me.

'That's not what it's about here. Every decision I make is for the good of Manchester United.

'For me, it's about results and if we keep improving we have a very good opportunity because this team and this squad is going places.'

After suffering back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir at the beginning of the month, United have responded with a 3-1 win at Everton and a 1-0 win over West Brom in the Premier League.

They then exacted revenge on Basaksehir with a 4-1 win at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, putting them in a strong position to qualify for the last-16 of the Champions League.

Solskjaer believes the three consecutive wins suggest United can finally find that elusive consistency.

He added: 'Teams that win the league put good runs together, consistent ones. I know this season is more uncertain, but if you look at the last 40 games with this team, we win one, draw one, win two, lose one. So we are getting consistent.

'Look at the stats since we got the latest transfers and since Bruno [Fernandes] came in. Since the Burnley game [a 2-0 home defeat in late January], only Liverpool have taken more points, so we are getting there. We are getting better and better.

'We did not start the league campaign on a par with everyone else because of Europe and a pre-season we didn't have. Now we are showing what we're capable of. If we carry on improving and keep the mindset, I am very sure we will move up.

'The season is very unpredictable and the main thing is to keep the right mindset. You can forgive any mistake as long as you have the right mindset and approach - I feel we are getting there.'
