Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal project is ready to explode with Gunners heading in the right direction

Mikel Arteta insists his Arsenal project is about to explode but admits only success on the pitch will convince outsiders of what he is seeing behind the scenes.

Arteta remains confident that Arsenal are heading in the right direction despite a season of inconsistency which has left them languishing in mid-table and undermined their attempts to build on their FA Cup win in his first campaign in charge.

‘I think this project is going to go “bang” but sometimes it is difficult to see the moment,’ said Arteta. ‘You need to win to convince anybody you are doing a good job and taking the club in the right direction.

‘It does not matter how well you play — if you don’t win, we are not going to convince any fan we are doing a great job.’

Arteta admitted Arsenal are out for revenge in tonight’s Europa League last 16 first leg against Olympiacos after being dumped out by the Greeks last season. ‘We have some feelings towards that team that we want to put right,’ he said. ‘Emotionally it took some time because it really hurt.’

TV: Olympiacos v Arsenal, 8pm. LIVE on BT Sport 1 from BT Sport 2 from 7.30pm.
