Marcos Rojo says he has been in contact with Manchester United's Edinson Cavani over a potential transfer to Boca Juniors.
Cavani 's contract at Old Trafford is due to expire at the end of the season, having joined the Red Devils on a one-year deal from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.
Rojo - who is now a Boca player after leaving United in January - believes Cavani could become a 'great star if he reaches Argentine football' and will 'do his bit to bring' him to the club.
Rojo told TNT Sports: 'I spoke with him (Cavani). I played a little with him. We were together for four or five months.
'He is a great professional and if he reaches Argentine football, he would be a great star that would do Argentine football good.'
While a friend of Rojo's has allegedly said: 'Marcos will do his bit to bring Cavani to Boca.'
However, United are keen to trigger the one-year extension in the short-term contract Cavani signed when he arrived as a free agent in October.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed with Cavani's contribution at United - having scored seven goals in 25 appearances for United.
Although, Solskjaer says the decision over the strikers future is in Cavani's hands as the 34-year-old striker has yet to make up his mind over his future at United.
Solskjaer said: 'He will make his decision. He knows we are very fond of what he has given to the club even though he has played less games than he wanted to.'
He added: 'A decision hasn't been made. He's made a great contribution so far. We're just working hard on getting him back on the pitch and fit. We'll work on convincing him when the weather in Manchester improves!'
The player’s father Luis has, however, said that Cavani does not feel comfortable in England - fuelling speculation that the player is unhappy over his treatment at the hands of the FA, who banned him for three games in January and fined him £100,000 for using the word ‘negrito’ in a social media post.
Cavani's father said: 'My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again.
'Edinson is going to end up playing in South America. I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important.
'Edinson had many conversations with [Boca vice-president Juan Roman] Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca.
'He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca. If he returns to South America he is leaning towards Boca.'
Cavani has since said he is proud to wear the Manchester United shirt after his father’s remarks.
He uploaded a picture to Instagram of him playing for the Red Devils alongside the caption: 'Proud to wear this shirt @ManUtd.'
