FC Porto have lost five of their eight UEFA Champions League games against Chelsea (W2 D1), only losing more against Real Madrid in the competition (6).
Chelsea have won 75% of their UEFA Champions League matches against Portuguese opponents (W9 D1 L2), only winning more games against Spanish teams (13) than against those representing Portugal.
This will be only the second knockout tie between Chelsea and Porto in the UEFA Champions League, with the Blues progressing 3-2 on aggregate during the Last 16 of the 2006-07 edition.
Since winning the UEFA Champions League in 2003-04, FC Porto have only won one of their six games in the competition at the quarter-final stage (D1 L4). Their last such victory came against Bayern Munich in April 2015, however they were later eliminated 7-4 on aggregate.
Following victories in both legs against Atlético Madrid in the Round of 16, Thomas Tuchel could become just the second Chelsea manager to win his first three games in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League. The previous manager to do this was Roberto Di Matteo in 2011-12, the last time Chelsea won the competition.
FC Porto have had just 46 sequences of 10+ passes in open play in this season’s UEFA Champions League, 50 fewer than any of the eight sides still in the competition. They are averaging 37% possession, the joint-lowest in this season’s competition along with already eliminated FK Krasnodar.
Chelsea have reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-final for the first time since 2013-14 under José Mourinho, when they eliminated Paris SG. Their only previous quarter-final against Portuguese opponents was in 2011-12, winning 3-1 on aggregate against Benfica.
Should he feature in this game, Porto defender Pepe (38y 40d) will be the oldest outfield player to appear in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final since Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs back in April 2014 (40y 123d versus Bayern Munich).
Sérgio Oliveira has scored five UEFA Champions League goals for FC Porto this term, the joint-most in a season by a Portuguese player for a Portuguese club, along with Nuno Gomes in 1998-99 for Benfica. The last to score more in a European Cup campaign was Eusébio in 1967-68, also for Benfica (6 goals).
Hakim Ziyech has been directly involved in 14 goals in his last 17 UEFA Champions League starts for Ajax and Chelsea, scoring seven and assisting seven. He has been directly involved in at least one goal in six of his seven starts in the knockout stage (4 goals, 2 assists).
