'How The Premier League Will Be Decided If It Can't Be Finished

The Premier League will return in less than three weeks time after clubs finally agreed on a June 17th start date, but they also voted on what would happen if they can't finish the competition.

On Thursday the league announced it had come to an agreement on when to restart, with Manchester City vs Arsenal and Aston Villa vs Sheffield United, the two games postponed for the Carabao Cup final, kicking off proceedings.

There are 92 games left to be played and there remains uncertainty if the league will be finished, even if it is restarted, and in the meeting the club's also agreed that should they be unable to play all the games the league would be decided on a points-per-game basis, according to the Mirror.

The PPG would not be weighted to take into account home and away games so if everyone had played the same amount of games at a second stop to the season then that's the position teams would finish.

The opening two games on June 17th are important for the fact that they are the two games in hand left and once played everyone will have played 29 times and have nine games left.

Arsenal's trip to Manchester was the first game postponed because of the pandemic as Arsenal players had to self isolate after coming into contact with the Olympiakos owner who had tested positive for Covid-19.

Should Mikel Arteta's side be victorious it would leave Liverpool needing just one win to claim their first title in 30 years, it would also put the Gunners above rivals Spurs in the league.

A win for Villa in their game against Chris Wilder's side would allow them to leapfrog Bournemouth, Watford and West Ham and take them out of the relegation zone.

The Blades need three points to take them above Wolves and Manchester United into fifth in the table, which is potentially enough for a Champions League place.

All the games that are left are due to be shown on television with Sky announcing that 25 of their 64 games will be available on free-to-air television and BBC getting four games.

There will potentially be games every night of the week with four time slots on Saturday and four on Sunday to allow fans to watch as many games as possible.
