Tottenham 'lead the race to sign Meunier' with right-back free to leave PSG

Tottenham are leading the race to sign soon-to-be free agent Thomas Meunier this summer, according to reports in France.

The right-back's contract at Paris Saint-Germain is due to expire on June 30 while an extension appears more and more unlikely as the days go by.

Despite announcing that his 'ambition was to stay at the club next season' earlier this week, PSG are intent on allowing his deal to run it's course, according to Le Parisien.

The Belgium international, who turns 29 in September, will now weigh up a number of options as he prepares to leave the French capital with Borussia Dortmund also interested.

Jose Mourinho is keen to strengthen at full-back, with Serge Aurier currently recognised as the club's only senior right back with Kyle Walker-Peters out on loan.

Meunier's representatives are understood to have already spoken to Mourinho to discuss his plans which are likely to be hindered by a limited budget.

According to L'Equipe, during a conversation over the phone between the pair, the manager made his case convincingly.

The right back was reportedly 'won over' by the pitch that has made Tottenham frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Meunier has plenty of bargaining power as a free agent and is in his prime.

Whether Daniel Levy can produce a financial offering in line with the defender's demands remains to be seen but the lack of a transfer fee will be an attractive prospect.

The extent to which the coronavirus crisis affects spending this summer will also dictate whether an agreement can be reached.
