'Legendary Premier League Goals That Wouldn't Have Counted With VAR

VAR has changed the Premier League forever and if it had come in sooner then some of the most legendary and iconic goals wouldn't have counted.

The past couple of years have seen referees helped out by VAR but the system is far from perfect and is still coming under criticism most weeks.

A lot of the issue seems to be that the video assistant referee is more likely to rule a goal out than overturn a goal not given and the annoyance of ruling out seemingly perfectly good goals.

Sky Sports put together a video of goals that wouldn't have counted if VAR had come in a few years ago:

Wayne Rooney's sensational strike from halfway against West Ham might be the most controversial goal in the video that wouldn't have counted but it's difficult to argue really.

You might not agree that the former Manchester United ace did foul James Tomkins but based on other decisions VAR has made this season it's easy to imagine it would have been ruled out.

The biggest disappointment would have been felt if Darren Bent's goal against Liverpool for Sunderland had never counted, even if it is one of the most blatant bad decisions.

Bent's shot struck a beach ball, that had floated onto the pitch after the pre match build up, and left Pepe Reina completely wrong footed.

How the referee ever felt that the goal should have stood is beyond everyone but anyone other than fans of the Reds' will forever be grateful for the goal, which didn't come off an ice cream truck.

Probably the only other more obvious mistake in the history of the Premier League, when it comes to refereeing errors for goals, is the Pedo Mendes shot somehow not given as a goal against Manchester United.

The Spurs midfielder shot from long range clearly crossed the line, following Roy Carroll's error in goal, but the ref and his assistant failed to see it go in.

Carroll then clawed the ball off the line and cleared it as if nothing had ever happened, you imagine he still probably got the hairdryer treatment afterwards.

Which goal do you wish VAR had been around for? Let us know in the comments.
