'How Manchester United And Leicester City Could Still Need A Champions League Play-Off

Manchester United and Leicester City are primed for a last day of the season show down to decide who gets into the Champions League, but they may have to meet a second time.

The two clubs are currently split only by goals scored, with Leicester four ahead of their rivals, with United taking on West Ham on Wednesday night before their meeting with the Foxes on Sunday.

Chelsea in third are still not guaranteed a place in the top four but a run of three results would the Blues into Europe's top competition next season and leave the others scrapping in a play-off to decide fourth.

For that to happen the Blues would need to win one of their final two games, against Liverpool on Wednesday or Wolves on Sunday, whilst United would have to beat West Ham 5-3.

If those align then a 1-0 win for Leicester on the final day of the season would lead to an unprecedented one off play-off, most likely at Wembley.

United's 5-3 win would take them one goal above Brendan Rodgers' side when it comes to goals scored and two ahead of them on goal difference.

Should Leicester then beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side at the King Power Stadium by 1-0 it would even everything up, but unlike previous seasons those are the only set of results that would make them even.

This season head-to-head record was added as an extra way of splitting teams, after points, goal difference and goals scored, with United's 1-0 win at Old Trafford earlier this season it would take an exact reversal for that to be level as well.

So a 6-4 Untied win on Wednesday followed by a 2-0 win for Leicester would actually see the Foxes finish above their rivals in the league.

Of course the Blues final two fixtures, against Liverpool and Wolves, means United and Leicester could see themselves in a position where a draw would take them both into the top four and leave Frank Lampard's team in next season's Europa League.

In an added quirk two points in the next two games for United would guarantee their place in next season's Champions League but three points doesn't guarantee it.

A draw on Wednesday would take them one point above Leicester and another draw against them keeps them at arm's length. But a win on Wednesday followed by a loss could still see them drop out of the top four on goal difference.
