Raphael Varane had one of his worst nights in a Real Madrid shirt, as the centre back made two huge errors that saw Real knocked out of the Champions League.
Zinedine Zidane's side knew they were going to need a huge night at the Etihad Stadium to make it through to the quarter final. They trailed 2-1 after the game in Madrid back in February and were without suspended captain Sergio Ramos.
It was a big night for Varane without his usual centre back partner but he messed up after just eight minutes, as he dallied on the ball and allowed Gabriel Jesus to take it off him and square to Raheem Sterling to make it 1-0.
Look away now Raphael Varane 👀

Karim Benzema headed a goal back for Los Blancos to give them a chance in the game but Varane messed up again in the second half to all but end the tie.
This time he failed to deal with a ball over the top and missed his first attempt at a header back to Thibaut Courtois, his second attempt landed short and Jesus was again the benefactor, rounding the keeper for 2-1 on the night.
Another mistake from Raphael Varane?! 😮

One of the best around, but he'll be having nightmares about Gabriel Jesus!
A lovely finish from the City striker 🙌#Club2020 pic.twitter.com/RKEB3fhfqo
And in typical fashion Football Twitter was all over the 27-year-old's performance.
Raphael Varane is the first outfield player across the last four seasons to make three errors leading to goals in a single #UCL campaign.

Varane joins the likes of Dida and Maicon in the “world class for ages but had one bad game against an English side so will be remembered as ‘rubbish’” hall of fame

If only there were a Pep gif to illustrate how many times Varane has screwed up tonight.

City and France fans might find it somewhat ironic that, whilst Varane was messing up twice, Aymeric Laporte was putting in another excellent performance for the Premier League side.
The centre back has somehow never been capped for the national team, in part because there are so many good options like the Real defender.
That might change next time Didier Deschamps picks a squad.
City now progress to the last eight for just the fourth time in their history and they will play Lyon in a one off game, with the tournament taking place in Lisbon from here on out.
