Troy Deeney has questioned why Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp even allowed Joe Gomez to go on international duty to face Ireland, after the defender picked up a serious injury in training.
Liverpool lost Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season, when they drew 1-1 in the Merseyside derby last month, leaving the Premier League champions short at the back.
Gomez would have expected to play a lot with Van Dijk out but on Wednesday it was revealed that he'd picked up a serious injury whilst on international duty.
Gareth Southgate's side face Ireland in a friendly on Thursday night and Troy Deeney questioned why Jurgen Klopp allowed the 23-year-old to join up with the national side.

🤔 “Why haven’t #LFC requested he didn’t go to this one?”
🤷♂️ “Why didn’t Liverpool say ‘we’ll refuse you to go’ to this one?”

England do face Belgium and Iceland in the next week in the Nations League, the final two games in group stage, but having the friendly as a third fixture in a week has come in for lots of criticism.
The same was the case in October when a friendly followed two games in the Nations League, all during an already packed season.
Whilst the former Charlton Athletic defender's injury could have happened at any time, the fact it happened before an unnecessary friendly will irk Liverpool even more.
Reds' fan Alan called talkSPORT and summed up the frustration that many fans will no doubt feel for losing yet another defender long term.

❌ "What is the point of playing these England friendlies which mean nothing."
👎 "Then he has the cheek to say it behind closed lips to get rid of prestigious cup competitions."

There was some good news about the injury on Thursday afternoon. Gomez has had surgery on his knee already to fix the tendons, but it was confirmed there was no damage to the ligaments.
That should hopefully mean less time out of action for Gomez, who will be hoping to be fit to play in the Euros next summer, having previously missed out on World Cup 2018 through injury.
The Premier League champions are currently missing 13 first team players through injury or illness and will be desperate to get Gomez back.

The issue was isolated to Gomez’s tendon, with no damage to any other associated knee ligaments and Joe will now begin a rehabilitation programme with our medical team 💪
Southgate still has Harry Maguire, Michael Keane, Conor Coady, Tyrone Mings, Eric Dier and even Kyle Walker as options to play in central defence.
