Mourinho 'keeping tabs on Ramos' contract stand-off at Real Madrid'

Jose Mourinho is reportedly hopeful of reuniting with defender Sergio Ramos as he monitors his contract stand-off at Real Madrid.

The 34-year-old, who played under Mourinho for three seasons at Madrid from 2010 to 2013, is in the final year of his deal.

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham has become a potential destination for the Spaniard as he considers leaving the Bernabeu after 15 years.

Ramos has been fielded proposals from a host of Europe's elite ranging from England to Italy, with Paris Saint-Germain also keen on signing the centre-back.

Mourinho is said to be keeping tabs on Ramos' contract tussle at Madrid and is wanting to sign an experienced winner at the back, much in the same style of Chelsea's addition of Thiago Silva at the start of this season.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane remained coy when questioned on Ramos' future at the club, as he stopped short of wishing the defender would stay under his reign.

'He is looking well, because he is convinced that he will continue and that is the most important thing,' said Zidane.

'I see him playing football for many years because he is someone who takes great care of himself.

'If you want to continue and take care of yourself, you have a great chance of continuing for a long time and I'm not surprised by what he does.'

The defender is able to begin talking with clubs in January and will become a free agent in the summer, should he decide to not extend his time in Spain.

Despite the fact Ramos would be a marquee signings for Spurs, there could potentially be a more pressing issue between the two clubs over Gareth Bale's loan in North London.

Los Blancos fear that the Welshman's stop-start loan spell at Tottenham could scupper their plans to make sensational swoops for Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Real's wage bill will need to be trimmed, with Bale currently earning an eye-watering £650,000 a week.

It will be easier said than done to offload the 31-year-old though, with Bale flattering to deceive since returning to north London for a move that Zidane had hoped would revive his stagnating career and be turned into a permanent sale.

If Mourinho is unable to sign Ramos or make any progress over the next month or so, he is likely to turn his attention to Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar.
