Garcia is a product of Barcelona's esteemed La Masia academy, but he left his homeland to join Manchester City as a 16-year-old.
He earned a sustained run in the City first team after project restart and is held in high regard at the club. However, Pep Guardiola revealed in August that Garcia had rejected the opportunity to extend his City contract.
The 19-year-old's deal at the Etihad expires in the summer of 2021, and he has long been linked with a return to Catalonia, either for a fee or on a free.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Garcia has now reached a 'total agreement' to join Barcelona in 2021, with personal terms agreed for a five-year deal.
The Spain international could re-join Barcelona as soon as January, however this would first require negotiations with Manchester City.
Although the agreements are in place, a contract is yet to be signed, and this will not be the case until after the Barcelona presidential election. Josep Maria Bartomeu's successor will be voted in on 24 January 2021.
The identity of the incoming Barcelona president is the only hurdle in Garcia's return to his boyhood club getting over the line, with a change in the vision and future planning from the successful candidate a potential stumbling block.
Garcia spent nine years in the Barcelona youth system before moving to Manchester City in 2017. He has gone on to make 30 first team appearances for Pep Guardiola's side, but has largely been restricted to a bit part this season, starting just twice in the Premier League.
