Arsenal fans weren't happy after their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.
In addition, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez seemed to bring down Alexandre Lacazette in the penalty area, but no sport kick was given.
After full time, former Premier League referee Peter Walton attempted to explain to Gooners why their side hadn't received a penalty, while speaking on BT Sport.
For all the red card debate last week, this decision is so bad it’s mental. How can this be more of a goalscoring opportunity? Maybe if Villa were playing with no keeper? pic.twitter.com/lIX52ajrxp

"First of all, VAR did look at it because they have a silent check on every incident and yes you can argue that the goalkeeper was fouled, you can argue that the goalkeeper was fouling Lacazette," he said.
"The point is VAR is not there to get the correct decision, it is there to identify clear and obvious errors from the referee or if the referee has missed something.
"What I would say is from a subjective point of view, has Lacazette used that opportunity to then lean on the goalkeeper?
"We all agree that within football there is a certain amount of physical contact allowed.
VAR ignores Emiliano Martinez pulling Alexandre Lacazette down in the box from a corner. 🤔 #afc pic.twitter.com/MWB3ScVkYS

"We get that and we don't want VAR looking at items of that nature where it's such a subjective viewpoint."
Walton also tried to say why the referee didn't even take a look at the pitchside monitor: "VAR is not there to re-referee the game and they will only send the referee over to the monitor when they feel there's a clear and obvious error being made or a missed incident as we've seen in the past.
"And don't forget it's still an evolving process and the guys who operate this are beginning to get more and more experience with it, so ultimately hopefully we will see consistency.
"At the moment there are still some areas of greyness."
Gunners fans were not best pleased by this...
I was wondering if @mrjakehumphrey could get Peter Walton to explain how @emimartinezz1 can have a handful of @LacazetteAlex shirt & it be a foul against the @Arsenal player? @FA need to seriously look at the performances of the officials, they can't even get it right with VAR pic.twitter.com/PPCh3xEsw1

How can the FA not intervene in the absolute awful standard of refereeing and the laughable application of VAR?

Surely in any other industry, this level of incompetence would be a source of embarrassment, that it would require urgent and immediate rectification? https://t.co/HfZe05Zzmq
Just making it up as they go along. Why can't they admit mistake. We all make mistakes.

Peter Walton is simply doing what Adrian Durham has been doing on TalkSport for years. Gaslighting, winding up, knowing full well the outrage it will cause the Arsenal fan base and the sweet, sweet clicks and exposure that brings

VAR in these situations is apparently there for the “clear and obvious” errors. Well, if Stockley Park reviewed properly, it was very clear and it was very obvious. Trouble is, there seems to be an inconsistency in the review process.

He's really on an Arsenal wind-up this week.

It's unbelievable how referees are unaccountable and untouchable for their mistakes, while a manager criticizing officials are sanctioned. There's no retrospective justice when teams lose points due to refereeing errors. Ridiculous.

What do you think? Should the decisions have ben overturned?
