Ed Woodward decided to resign from Manchester United because he was in opposition to the Glazers plans to join the European Super League, according to reports.
Woodward, the club's executive vice chairman, has not been popular at all amongst fans at United throughout his time at Old Trafford, especially since taking over from David Gill in 2013.
The 49-year-old has been blamed for the poor transfer dealings for the team and the general malaise of many aspects of the club in recent years.
On Tuesday night, as the Super League collapsed around Florentino Perez, it was announced that Woodward would be leaving the club at the end of the year.
Reports even suggested that Woodward, who was confronted at a meeting by Harry Maguire who was angry at the exec, was always leaving the club and it had nothing to do with the absolute embarrassing failure of the new competition and his part in it.
New reports on Thursday though have claimed the opposite, saying that the former JP Morgan employee actually resigned because he was against the whole Super League from the start.

Call me a cynic but didn't Woodward hire a former Sun journalist at the beginning of 2020 to become his PR adviser at United?!
Fortunately I wouldn't be the only one who isn't exactly buying the news:

If I speak....
None of us are buying it fella.
Hope this helps
Ed Woodward briefing after he's announced he's leaving that he didn't believe in the thing we're led to believe he was negotiating for at least a year - is exactly what you'd expect Ed Woodward to brief now.

Fans are supposed to buy the idea that Woodward was some sort of martyr, despite the fact that UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin called out the United exec by name earlier in the week.
Ceferin explained that the Old Trafford exec had agreed to the new Champions League format before going off to hatch the Super League plan, calling Woodward a snake.
What's more is the fact that the announcement about his resignation came with a ringing endorsement from the usually silent Joel Glazer, who would have hardly mentioned the end of Woodward's time if they were at loggerheads.
What's more is Real Madrid president Perez even said the clubs had been planning the Super League for three years, maybe Ed could have resigned at any time then.
If you believe that Ed Woodward resigned in opposition to the Super League then you probably also believe Perez when he says they set it up to save the smaller clubs...
