David Luiz out for4 weeks but Arsenal hopeful he will be back this season

David Luiz is expected to play again this season despite undergoing knee surgery on Sunday.

The Arsenal defender underwent the ‘small procedure’ over the weekend, throwing into doubt his availability for the remainder of the campaign.

But Sportsmail understands that there is hope Luiz, who is a key player for Mikel Arteta, will miss in the region of four weeks.

If all goes according plan the Brazilian could be available for the climax to the Gunners’ season.

The news will come as a major boost to Arteta, ahead of the campaign’s finale.

While there is little left to play for in the Premier League, the north London club are still in the Europa League; they face Slavia Prague in their quarter final first-leg on Thursday.

And, provided they progress, the possibility of having Luiz available for the final of Europa League matches will come as a welcome boost for the Gunners.

The Brazilian has started all four of Arsenal's European knockout matches so far this season, first against Benfica and then Olympiacos.

Should the Gunners get past Slavia Prague in his absence, they will face Dinamo Zagreb or Villarreal in the semi finals, setting up a potential reunion with former boss Unai Emery who now manages the Spanish side.

But they will face a Slavia Prague side full of confidence at the Emirates on Thursday, having knocked out Leicester and Rangers in the previous rounds.
