West Brom were denied a certain goal by VAR, as the system seemed to check the offside against the wrong player.
Sam Allardyce's side went into Monday evening's game knowing they had to continue their form from their incredible 5-2 win over Chelsea last week, if they had any chance of avoiding the drop.
The Baggies started extremely well and had the ball in the back of the net inside the first three minutes of the game, when Darnell Furlong's shot was converted by Mbaye Diagne.
The assistant referee instantly raised his flag for what looked a tight offside so VAR had its usual look to decide the outcome.
Lines were drawn as usual and it was adjudged the striker was offside. However it soon transpired that Kyle Bartley was offside but Diagne was actually fine.
NO GOAL! ❌

West Brom thought they'd taken the lead, but Diagne is adjudged to have been in an offside position...

Jan Vestergaard's position did make it difficult for the linesman to pick out whether the goal was offside but it seems that the Saints defender also baffled the video assistant referee.
VAR HQ, Stockley Park, explained the decision, claiming, "The position of the camera we couldn't draw a definitive line."
But social media was aghast that the decision, that was quite clear to the human eye one watching the replay, was not overturned.
Did #var use the offside lines on the wrong WBA player???

Due to VAR being unable to "draw a definitive line" because of the camera's position, they stuck with the original on-field decision.

Meaning West Brom's early 'goal' was ruled out...#WBASOU pic.twitter.com/ghefug1Acx
Good to see VAR eradicating errors from the beautiful game... 😂 pic.twitter.com/zMMdSzsbU5

"Couldn't draw a definitive line" to rule if onside? How about just using your fkin eyes man? I'm neutral and I'm annoyed! #WBASOU #VAR #OFFSIDE pic.twitter.com/Rxz8zWKBsu

“Couldn’t draw a definitive line”

What is is the actual point of the technology then ?! #wba
VAR couldn't draw a line through Diagne, because of the camera position, therefore the on-field decision stands, despite it looking like it was the wrong one.

Give me strength.
Oh for crying out loud, take a day off, VAR.

How can they not see with their own eyes that he is clearly not offside? I don’t need any lines to see that. VAR is atrocious #WBASOU pic.twitter.com/JKyf5dKCCS

VAR is not the problem, it's the officials behind it that are the problem

no way have VAR just ruled this as offside (guy in yellow boots scored).

Honestly have no idea what they’re smoking in the VAR room. #VAR #WBA pic.twitter.com/Ggh8acZ0Q7
West Brom did manage to take the lead, just after the half hour mark, as Matheus Pereira scored from the penalty spot after Fraser Forster fouled the forward in the box.
Fortunately for even VAR managed mess that one up!
