'Spain's Issues With Coronavirus Suggests Fans Shouldn't Be Travelling From Madrid

Atletico Madrid fans will be in attendance at Anfield on Wednesday night in the Champions League but with their home games being played behind closed doors they probably shouldn't be.

The Champions League and Europa League have joined many of Europe's domestic leagues in being affected by Coronavirus this week, with several games being played behind closed doors.

Liverpool's home game with Atletico isn't on that list but it probably should be.

As per the Mirror's David Maddock the La Liga side are coming from the city that has the fastest growing rate of contagion in the world.

All La Liga games have been ordered to be played behind closed doors, meaning Atleti fans can't see their team at their own stadium.

The increase of Coronavirus in Madrid and Spain has led to the ban of fans at games but the same fans can travel to England to watch the game because there is no travel ban in place from the British government or from UEFA.

As well as games in Spain being played without fans, games in Italy, Germany and France have also been ordered to be played behind closed doors but England is yet to have any such measures.

Manchester City's game with Arsenal is off after some of the Gunners' staff went into self isolation after the Olympiakos owner revealed he'd tested positive for the virus.

The north London side played the Greek team in the Europa League nearly two weeks ago meaning they're in self isolation until Friday, so their game against Brighton at the weekend isn't off.

Cases and deaths from the virus aren't as high in the UK as certain places on the continent but as European Economic Policy & Political Economy expert Silvia Merler points out the country is only 13 days behind Italy in the numbers.

It surely can't be long until UK government are forced to do something about football matches and large gatherings of people.
