Full extent of Arsenal savings after transfer clear-out gives Arteta boost

Mikel Arteta could benefit from a transfer boost after Arsenal's squad clear-out in the January transfer window.

Shkodran Mustafi left the Gunners for Schalke on deadline day, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock went out on loan to West Brom and Newcastle respectively.

Their moves followed exits earlier this month for Mesut Ozil and Sokratis, as well as goalkeeper Matt Macey.

Sead Kolasinac also left the Emirates in the current transfew window, joining Schalke on loan, while William Saliba switched to Nice for the remainder of the season.

Arteta needed to streamline his bloated squad, and the Gunners' success in doing so could lead to a transfer boost for the manager ahead of the summer window.

The biggest saving of course came from the termination of Ozil's contract ahead of his move to Fenerbahce.

The playmaker was on a staggering £350,000 per week - which is why Arsenal agreed to cancel his contract rather than hold out for a transfer fee.

Sokratis, who has joined Olympiacos on a free transfer, was on around £90,000 per week, according to wtfoot.com.

And Macey, who has joined Hibernian, was paid around £10,000 per week.

That amounts to £450,000 per week from permanent exits - and with 21 weeks before contracts traditionally end on June 30, that translates to a potential saving of £9.45million.

But then there's the loan departures, with Kolasinac on £100,000 per week according to Spotrac.com - while Maitland-Niles is on £35,000 and Willock is paid £20,000 each week.

That's another £155,000 shaved off the weekly wage bill - or £3.25m between now and June 30.

That makes a total of £12.7m - although that figure doesn't take into account any settlements made over the early termination of contracts.
